It was a beautiful day out on the ocean. The birds were flying high and the dolphins jumped up and down out of the water, and a giant sailing ship cut through the waters as the sailors sang out together.
Sailors: I'll tell ye a tale of the bottomless blue,
And it's hey to starboard, heave-ho!
Look out, lass, a merman be waitin' for you,
In mysterious fathoms below!
Standing on the topdeck was a three-foot tall female mouse with black fur and big, round ears wearing a pink and yellow dress, pink hightops, and a pink bow in her hair. Her name was Minnie Mouse. With her was her faithful pet, Dodger, who was a terrier that had white fur with brown on his back and head, and gray on his muzzle and paws and a red bandana around his neck.
"Isn't this wonderful?" Minnie asked. "Salty sea air, the wind blowing in your face...it's enough to make you forget your troubles, isn't it?"
"Sure is, kiddo," Dodger replied. Then he turned to a female duck in a lavender dress, shoes, and bow as he asked, "Ain't this somethin', Daisy?"
"Oh, yeah...it's delightful," the duck, now known as Daisy, said queasily as she hung over the railing.
"Winds are pullin' light today, lassies," said Jack Sparrow as he tied down some rigging. "Looks as if ol' Yen Sid got a touch o' somethin' pleasing."
"Yen Sid?" Minnie repeated in confusion.
"Why, he means the leader of the merpeoples!" said Ludwig Von Drake as he put fish in a barrel. "I thought every knowledgable person knew about him!"
"Hmph, merpeople," Daisy scoffed as she regained her health a little. "Minnie, don't listen to Von Drake, he's just spitting out a lot of mythical mumbo jumbo!"
"But it ISN'T mumbo jumbo!" snapped Von Drake as he shook a fish at Daisy's face angrily. "Yen Sid and the merpeoples, they ALL live down there, I...!" Von Drake was about to go on before a fish slipped away from his grasp, slapped Daisy a few times with its tail, and dove back into the ocean.
"Nice going," Daisy scowled.
"Well, one less fish to worry about, ho ho!" Von Drake chuckled.
Sailors: Heave-ho! Heave-ho! In mysterious fathoms below!
Little did Daisy or Minnie suspect, merpeople were as real as you and I. They all lived in the underwater city on Atlantica, under the firm-yet-fair rule of the great merwizard known as Yen Sid. And his main rule, which was to be abided by all the city's denizens, was that everyone in the sea was prohibited from going to the surface, for fear of being spotted by humans. But there was little reason to worry about that today, for there was a great concert to be performed by Yen Sid's students.
As everyone gathered into the Concert Hall, a blue fish with a pointed blue wizard's hat named Merlin swam out to the center and cleared his throat.
"Announcing, his royal majesty, Yen Sid!" Merlin shouted. And right on cue, a seashell chariot came out being drawn by three dolphins. Piloting the chariot was an eldery merman with a long, grey beard and a midnight blue whale-like tail. He wore long, flowing blue robes and wore a pointed wizard's hat with silver stars and a creasent moon. He was Yen Sid, the ruler of Atlantica. As he piloted his chariot by a chandelir, he took a glowing white hand and flicked it, making the chandelir explode with light as sparks showered down onto the crowd below.
"And now, the court composer...Dasheil Parr, and his girlfriend Haley Long!" Merlin announced. Now another seashell chariot came out, but this one was smaller and pulled by two sea bass. Piloting the chariot was a merboy with messy blonde hair, a black thin-strip mask, and a red mertail with black fins. He was Yen Sid's kid court composer, Dash Parr.
With him was a young mermaid with black hair tied into pigtails, and a purple mertail. She only wore a chartruce scarf across her chest. She was Haley Long, Dash's girlfriend.
"I trust that this performance will be your greatest yet, Dasheil?" Yen Sid asked with a grin.
"Your Majesty, this is gonna be the greatest work I've EVER composed!" Dash said proudly.
"Yeah, your students are all gonna be great!" Haley agreed with a grin.
Yen Sid chuckled slightly. "Yes, I'm sure they will...especially young Mickey Mouse."
"Oh, your apprentice?" Haley asked. "Yup! He sure will! That mouse has the greatest voice!"
"If only he used it at rehersals once in a while," Dash grumbled.
So Dash and Haley swam down to the conductor's podium, where a spotlight shone down on them. Dash then took out a sheet of music and set it on the stand. Then, after a quick crack of his fingers, he took a conductor's baton from Haley. And with a few taps of his baton, Dash set the band in motion, as three clamshells opened up to reveal each one of Yen Sid's students as they sang out:
Oh, we are the students of Yen Sid,
Great teacher who loves us and knows us well:
Aladdin...
And Jasmine...
Peter Pan...
And Alice...
Hercules...
And Megara,
And now our seventh little friend we'll introduce to you,
To sing a song that Dasheil wrote, it's very grand it's true,
He's our good friend Mickey...
A fourth clamshell opened up, revealing absolutely nobody inside of it! Gasps of shock went up in the crowds. Haley gasped, too, but Dash just growled and clutched his fists. But he wasn't the only one that was angry; in fact, his anger didn't measure up to Yen Sid's.
"MIIICKEEEY!!!" Yen Sid roared furiously.
Meanwhile, outside the city, three figures swam up to something and looked ahead. One of these figures was a beautiful mermaid with long, red hair, sparking blue eyes, and a green mertail. The only thing she wore was a purple seashell bra, and she carried a golden trident with her on her back. Her name was Ariel.
The second figure was a very small creature. He had the top half of a rat, with dark gray fur and a pink nose, ears, and paws. But his bottom hald looked like a goldfish tail, even though it was the same color. He also carried a spoon with a cyan gem studded on it. He was known as Remy.
But the main character in this trio, and the hero of this story, was a mermouse that looked a lot like Minnie, but he was a boy. He had the same round ears and black fur, but he also wore white gloves and had a red tail with lighter red flukes. He was none other than Mickey Mouse.
"There it is, guys," Mickey said as he pointed towards something.
"Wow...it's amazing!" Ariel whispered in awe.
"It's everything you said it would be, Mick'," Remy agreed with a grin.
Mickey chuckled. "Didn't I tell ya?" he asked. "I'm a mermouse of my word; I always deliver!" Mickey would've said something else if not for someone shouting out,
"Mickey! Guys! Wait up!"
Mickey, Remy, and Ariel turned around and saw six figures swimming towards them. One of them, the one who called, looked like a duck with white feathers, an orange bill, and blue eyes wearing a blue sailor's cap with a black tassle, but he had six blue octopus legs for his bottom half. He also carried a Mage's Staff with him. He was Mickey's best pal, Donald Duck.
(A/N: I know Donald doesn't wear his usual cap in Atlantica in Kingdom Hearts, but I feel like he isn't complete without it.)
The next figure was just as strange as Donald. He looked like a sea turtle with a light-green shell, yellow flippers, and an orange underbelly. But he had the head of a dog with black fur and buck teeth wearing a funny green hat. There was also a shield on part of his shell. He was Mickey's other best pal, Goofy.
Two other figures in the group were both merchildren. One of them was a well-built Native American merboy with tan skin, long black hair, and sky blue eyes. He also had a gray dolphin-like mertail. His name was Carter, one of Mickey's friends.
The other merchild was a mermaid the same age as Carter, but with lighter skin, blonde hair, ocean blue eyes, and a purple mertail that faded partway down into gold. She only wore a green tanktop bellyshirt. Her name was Jaqulin, Carter's girlfriend.
One last creature was also with the gang. He had the upper body of a giant blue-gray bear with messy hair and black eyes. But his lower half was that of a manatee. He was Baloo.
"I was wonderin' where you all were!" Mickey laughed.
"Gawrsh, you know we can't swim as fast as you can," Goofy panted.
"But Baloo was sleeping in again; that's why we're late," Donald said before he narrowed his eyes at the merbear.
"Hey, didn't I say I was sorry?" Baloo asked as he arched an eyebrow.
"We know you did, but you always do this to us," Jaqulin said with a smirk. "So we really have no reason to believe you."
"So anyway, what did you bring all of us out here for?" Carter asked.
"That," Mickey said as he pointed towards a giant shipwreck. The whole thing looks like it's seen better days, with holes in the hull and tattered sails.
"Woooah..." everyone but Donald and Goofy said at once.
"Well, now," Baloo said in awe. "Thinkin' of doin' a little treasure hunting, are we?"
"Yup! It sure does look great, huh?" Mickey asked.
"Uh, yup, sure looks purdy nice," Goofy said nervously.
"But we gotta go now!" Donald quacked as he and Goofy began to swim off. But Jose grabbed his tentacles while Carter and Jaqulin stopped Goofy.
"You guys aren't getting cold fins on us now, are you?" Remy asked.
"Uh-uh, of course not!" Donald said trying to sound a little braver.
"It's just that, uh..." Goofy said, trying to think up an excuse.
"Well?" Jaqulin asked as she folded her arms and arched an eyebrow.
"It's, uh...damp in there, that's all!" Goofy said. "Yeah, that's it! And, uh, I got me a nasty cold just yesterday, too." Goofy tried to make it sound like he was sick, but it didn't really work too well.
"Y-y-yeah, me too!" Donald said, following Goofy's lead with a quick sneeze. But that worked as well as Goofy's excuse did...which isn't very well.
"Well, if you guys are really sick, you can just stay out here," Ariel giggled, knowing that Donald and Goofy were faking.
"Yeah, all you need to do is watch out for sharks," Carter said casually.
"Good luck!" Remy called out as he and the others swam off to the ship.
"Alrighty than, we can stay out here and watch for...uh..." Goofy said, trying to remember what they agreed to watch for.
"Sharks," Donald finished for him.
"Oh, right, a-hyuk!" Goofy chuckled. But it only took the duo a few moments before they realized what they just talked themselves into.
"Bwak! Wait a minute! I'm afraid of sharks!" Donald panicked.
"Me, too!" Goofy said before he started to swim off towards the shipwreck with Donald close behind him. Goofy and Donald were neck-and-neck going towards an open porthole, and they both got in at the same time, getting the both of them stuck. They also got in just as Jaqulin was going inside, knocking her all the way through the porthole into Ariel and Remy.
"Yikes!" Remy squeaked as he got squashed underneath Ariel's belly.
"What's the big idea!?" Donald quacked as he bonked Goofy over the head with his rod.
"Sorry, Donald," Goofy chuckled sheepishly.
"Aw, fellas," Mickey chuckled as he went to go help Donald out. Ariel slipped out from under Jaqulin and went to go help Goofy.
"Are you sure there aren't any sharks around here?" Donald asked nervously.
"C'mon, there ain't no sharks around here," Baloo said casually.
"Yeah, don't be a couple of guppies!" Ariel said.
"We ain't guppies," Goofy corrected. "We're a sea turtle and an octopus." Eventually, Donald and Goofy popped through the porthole...unaware that something was out there, looking for lunch.
Meanwhile, the crew swam around inside the shipwreck looking around for different things to find. But while Mickey, Ariel, Remy, Carter, Jaqulin, and Baloo were all approaching this fearlessly, Donald and Goofy were, to say the least, a little afraid of what could possibly happen.
"Gee, this sure is fun," Goofy shuddered.
"Yup...excitement, adventure, danger around every..." Donald was about to go on before Goofy ran into an impaled skeleton and freaked out. The goof backed into a weak support beam on the ship and caved part of it in. He then rocketed forward, barreling into everyone in front of him, including a flustered Donald.
"Oww..." Jaqulin groaned.
"Gosh, are you guys okay?" Mickey asked from underneath everyone.
"Y-yup, we're good," Goofy studdered.
"Sure wish I could say the same," Baloo grunted as he got up. Mickey then shushed everyone as he swam upward. Everyone else followed him up to the next level. It was then that Mickey stopped and widened his eyes in shock.
"Oh, golly!" he said excitedly as he swam over to a strange-looking four-pronged object. "Isn't this somethin?"
"Wow, yeah!" Jaqulin giggled.
"Looks cool to me," Carter agreed.
"Now, uh...what is it?" Remy asked.
Mickey chuckled his trademark laugh as he said, "I'm not too sure. But I betcha anything Iago will know."
"Aw, Mick', are you sure that birdbrain knows about human stuff?" Baloo asked with an arched eyebrow. "I kinda don't trust him."
"Well, he HAS known him ever since we rescued Dash from that big floating thing a while back," Donald explained. "He's our expert on human things!"
(A/N: Believe it or not, this is a reference to an episode in the Little Mermaid TV series where Ariel, Flounder, and Sebastian met Scuttle for the very first time.)
"Are you sure he knows everything about human items?" Jaqulin asked.
"Uh-huh," Goofy nodded. And suddenly, everyone heard something swim by...or so they thought.
"What was that?" Remy asked as she looked around nervously.
"G-g-g-gawrsh," Goofy chattered. "Didja hear that?"
"Yup," Donald gulped nervously.
Meanwhile, Mickey found a pipe and looked at it in confusion. "Hmm, wonder what this thing is?" he asked.
"Beats me," Ariel said with a shrug.
Suddenly, everyone heard a noise that made Donald jump, flail his staff arm, and accidently bonk Baloo in the face. "Oooh!" Baloo said as he clutched his nose.
"Oops...sorry, Baloo," Donald chuckled sheepishly. Baloo let go of his nose, and a little bit of blood leaked out from it. Unfortunately, the scent of the blood didn't travel too far before it was caught by the thing that was wandering outside...which happened to be Bruce the Shark. He took a good whiff of the blood, then his pupils became as large as dinner plates.
"Ooooh, that's good," he said as he grinned, revealing his rows and rows of teeth.
Goofy looked out the window and saw Bruce charging forward. "Uh, guys? Somethin's comin' this way!" he said in a panic.
"Goofy, nothing's coming, okay?" Remy said irritably. "There's nobody else here except Mickey, Donald, Carter, Jaqulin, Baloo, Ariel, me, and..." Remy was about to continue, but was cut off by Donald's loud cry of,
"BRUUUUUUCE!!!"
Bruce smashed through the wall of the ship as he shouted, "I'M HAVIN' FISH TONIGHT!!!"
Everyone scattered about and swam through the ship, dodging Bruce's jaws. They tried to get to the exit, but Mickey accidently dropped his duffle bag. He went to get it, but Bruce was about to chomp down on him. Mickey winced and awaited his imminent fate, but Goofy quickly charged forward and smashed into Bruce's nose with his shield. Opening one eye, then both, Mickey quickly grabbed his bag and swam for his life with the others. Bruce was quick to recover, and began to give more of a chase. But Carter and Jaqulin, knowing what was coming, whipped out two Keyblades and slammed them against the side of the ship. This made the top end of the shipwreck cave in and catch Bruce.
"Take that, you big ol' palooka!" Donald quacked as Goofy blew a raspberry at Bruce. But all the Great White Shark did was chomp viciously at the duo, who swam away in fear.
"Aw, fellas," Mickey chuckled as he swam for the surface.
"Ariel was right earlier!" Baloo laughed. "Yer both guppies!"
"Aw, shut up!" Donald quacked in annoyance.
Later, up on the surface on a rock, a parrot was busy fiddling with a pair of binoculars as he sat in a crow's nest. He had red feathers, save for the tips of his wings, which were blue and his tail, which was purple, along with a huge yellow beak, a unibrow, and yellow eyes. His name was Iago.
"Iago!" A familiar falsetto voice called.
"Whoa!" Iago yelped as he looked in the wrong end of the binoculars. "Sea creatures off the port bow! Hey, Mickey! How are ya doin' kid?" The red parrot put his binoculars down and noticed that Mickey and his friends were a lot closer than he saw them. "Wow, what a swim!"
Mickey chuckled his trademark laugh as he pulled out his bag. "Hey, Iago. Look at what we found."
"Uh-hyuk! Yeah. We were in this really creepy sunken ship, and-." Goofy added before Iago interrupted him.
"Human stuff??? Oh, boy!" exclaimed the bird. "Now, let's see whatcha got..." Iago flew down to the sea creatures' level before he pulled out the fork. "Well, whaddya know! This kinda thingamajig is really special!"
"So what is it?" Ariel asked excitedly.
"A dinglehopper!" Iago said. "Humans use this thing to straighten to their hair out! Like this!" As if to demonstrate, Iago began to fiddle with the so-called "Dinglehopper" in his hair. But instead of turning out nicely, it was now more of an afro. "There ya go, guys! This is something that humans go nuts for!" He said as he handed the fork back to Mickey.
"Wow...a dinglehopper!" Mickey said in astonishment.
"So how about this thing?" Remy asked as he gestured towards the pipe.
"Wow! This I haven't seen in years! This is wonderful!" Iago said excitedly as he looked at the pipe. "It's a snarfblatt!"
"Cool," Jaqulin said. "How does it work?"
"Well, you see," Iago explained, "the snarfblatt dates back to prehistoric times! They all just used to sit around and stare at each other all day," The big-beaked bird continued, looking into Mickey's face. "After awhile, it got really boring. ANYWAY, they invented this snarfbatt to make fine music! Like so!" Iago blew into the supposed "snarfblatt" to demonstrate, only to find it was clogged as his cheeks went red from blowing hard. He stopped blowing as he coughed a bit. "Yuck! It's stuck!"
The music was horrible, both in sound and a realization to Mickey. "Music?! Oh, my gosh! I can't believe I forgot the concert was today!" The mermouse exclaimed in shock and worry as he started re-packing up his bag. "Yen Sid is gonna kill me!"
"The concert was today??" Donald asked in surprise.
"Baloo, I thought you said it was tomorrow!" Carter said, glancing at Baloo.
The merbear just shrugged as he spoke. "Hey, don't blame me. Dash must've changed the date. He's always changing stuff without telling us first!"
"Sorry, Iago! I gotta go!" Mickey said urgently, grabbing the pipe from Iago before swimming off with his friends following. "Thanks a bunch, though!"
"Anytime, guys!" Iago called back. "Anytime!"
Soon, Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Ariel, Remy, Jaqulin, Carter, and Baloo were swimming back to Atlantica. But little did they all know...they were being watched by two snakes. The first one was a greenish snake wearing a red cape and matching feather hat with a white feather on it while the other was a green python. Their names were Sir Hiss and Kaa. The duo watched on evilly as Kaa's right eye and Sir Hiss's left eye each glowed yellow. That glow was some sort of magic sight spell, being used by an evil beings back in a dark lair somewhere.
In that dark lair, the creature in question that was watching sat in a chair while watching his crystal ball. This creature was what seemed to be a fat cat-like creature with black fur, white gloves, and eight purple octopus tentacles from the waist down. This was Pete, the banished warlock. You see, Pete was once part of the Atlantica kingdom. But a crime he committed caused him to be forever-exiled from the kingdom.
"Yeah, yeah...hurry home, mousey," Pete said as he watched Mickey and his friends. "Wouldn't want to miss ol' Yen Sid's big celebration, now, wouldja?" In a quick instant, the cecaelian cat scowled as he gave a scoff. "Celebration. Bah! When I was in power, there were fantastic feasts and celebrations abound."
At that, Pete picked up a shrimp from a bowl, and tossed him in his mouth, and ate him. The aquatic cat-like creature then spoke dramatically and sadly, before sounding mad as he eventually got out of his seat. "Now I'm forced to live out here in dis hell-soaked place while I nearly starve ta death, while those idiots celebrate at da castle. But I'll be sure to give them something to TRULY celebrate soon enough..."
Spinning around, Pete glared at the crystal ball as he called, "Hey, Kaa! Hiss!"
Startled at hearing that, Sir Hiss bumped his head before he and Kaa looked puzzled.
"Oww. Yes, your wretchedness?" Sir Hiss asked, rubbing where he bumped his head.
"I want you two to keep an eye on ol' wizard boy's pupil." Pete answered as Kaa and Hiss grinned evilly and swam off to follow Mickey and his pals. Back in his lair, Pete put his hands together while his tentacles started casting a shadow over him as he grinned wickedly. "The little runt just might be the key I need to bring ol' Yen down..."
